MARIETTA, Ga. -- A Pope High School student-athlete has been named the 2011-2012 Gatorade Georgia Volleyball Player of the Year.

Senior Mary Hannah Arrington is the second Pope High student to receive the honor. The first, Mary Hoey, was named during the 2009-2010 school year.

The 5-foot-9-inch outside hitter led the Greyhounds to a 43-2 record and a third consecutive Class 4A state championship in her final high school season. She was named Player of the Year in her class by the Georgia Volleyball Coaches Association, as well as an Under Armour Honorable Mention All-American.

Off the court, Arrington maintains a 3.95 weighted GPA, serves as a youth swim and volleyball instructor, volunteers on behalf of her church and raises money for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

"Arrington is a kid who, defensively, if you need a dig that's going to change the outcome of a match, she's going to make that play," said Bob Westbrook, director of the A5 Volleyball Club. "She's a tremendous offensive player as well. She's grown in that area every single year, and she's responded to the pressure of being a leader of her program on a regular basis."

"She's an extraordinary competitor," Westbrook added. "She has that quality that's very rare in that she makes other people around her better."

Arrington has signed a National Letter of Intent to play volleyball on scholarship at Auburn University next fall.

Last year's Gatorade Georgia Volleyball Player of the Year, Kelly Murphy, also attends a Cobb County high school. She is currently a senior at Walton High.
