Man sentenced for killing lover over dinner dispute

MARIETTA, Ga. -- A Marietta man will spend life in prison after pleading guilty to killing his longtime lover over dinner.

Frank Davis Bowles, 59, of Marietta admitted that around Oct. 3, he shot Samuel Collins, 60, multiple times after the couple argued about how dinner had been cooked.

After shooting Collins, Bowles dragged the body out of their home on Old Concord Road in Marietta into the woods at the back of the property, then took the victim’s driver’s license and credit cards and drove to Tennessee in the victim’s van.

Within a day or so, Tennessee law enforcement officers found Bowles passed out inside the van on the side of a highway. Bowles soon confessed to the killing.

It happened on July 14, as Cobb County Commissioner Lisa Cupid left the Wingate Hotel near Six Flags around 1:30a.m., after studying for the bar exam and noticed a car behind her.


Threat to American soldiers was a hoax

MARIETTA, Ga -- A National Guard soldier was arrested for filing a false report of a threat that took social media by storm and created fear among local military personnel.

Cobb County police said the threat to the lives of soldiers was a hoax.

Brett Downing, 23, of Cumming, filed the alleged report of a terroristic threat against American soldiers on July 21, 2015. Two weeks later he admitted he made it up.

Marietta man dies from injuries in Thursday accident

MARIETTA, Ga. -- Marietta police confirmed Saturday that a pedestrian hit in a mid-week accident has died.

Police said Gerald Mack of Marietta, who was struck by a vehicle early Thursday morning, died at Kennestone Hospital Saturday morning.

The accident happened in the early hours on Delk Road near Franklin Road, police said.

Currently, Marietta Police Department's Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) Unit is investigating the accident.

Police said the vehicle involved was traveling westbound on Delk Road and struck the pedestrian that was crossing the road outside of a crosswalk.

The driver remained at the scene police said.

Taxi driver shot to death in Marietta


MARIETTA, Ga. -- Police say a taxi driver was found shot to death in Marietta early Thursday.

According to the Marietta Police Department, officers responded to a 911 call just before 3 a.m. and found the man dead in a vehicle at 2235 Northwest Parkway, which is right off of Franklin Road. The car was outside of the extended stay hotel The Allaround Suites.

The driver has been identified as 65-year-old Mike Bemus.

By late Thursday, authorities said that had a person of interest in custody. A motive has not been determined. That person's name has not been released.

Fallen Marine remembered for service, sacrifice and kindness

WOODSTOCK, Ga. -- It was an afternoon of touching tributes to Cobb County Marine Lance Cpl. Skip Wells.


Hundreds lined the streets as the 21-year-old made his final journey home.

He was laid to rest on Sunday after being gunned down the previous week outside of a recruiting center in Chattanooga, Tenn.

Hundreds of his friends, fellow service members and neighbors came to First Baptist Woodstock to remember and honor a man who gave everything for a country he loved.

Wells was remembered for his service, his friendship and his dedication to his family and country.

Funeral held for local Marine killed in Chattanooga

MARIETTA, Ga. -- On Sunday, family and friends said goodbye to a friend, a loved-one and a brother-in-arms - the young Marine from Cobb County who died in a Chattanooga shooting along with four other servicemen.

Marine Lance Corporal Squire "Skip" Wells was one of five service members killed when a gunman opened fire at two centers on July 16.

Wells, 21, was from Marietta and attended Sprayberry High School.
