COBB COUNTY, Ga. -- A Canton man will spend the rest of his life in prison after being found guilty of murdering another man inside a Marietta bar.

Dennis Lee Hampton was convicted in March of shooting 34-year-old Takilam Terrell to death.

The murder happened Apr. 7, 2013, at Milo's Bar and Grill on Garrison Road. Prosecutors said Terrell was arguing with his girlfriend, and Hampton's cousin got involved in the dispute, escalating it. Hampton then stepped in, pulled out a handgun and fired a shot, striking Terrell. The two reportedly did not know each other.

A Cobb County jury convicted Hampton of malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, and firearm use by a convicted felon during the commission of a crime. He was acquitted of one count of aggravated assault with a bottle.

During Tuesday's sentencing hearing, Hampton, 43, maintained his innocence and asked for leniency, but a Cobb County Superior Court judge still sentenced him to life without parole plus 15 years in prison.

"While the defense may ask for mercy today, the defendant extended none on April 7, 2013," Cobb County Deputy Chief ADA Jesse Evans said in court.

Hampton was sentenced as a recidivist; he has two prior felony convictions.

Milo's Bar and Grill was permanently closed in March 2014 after nearly 50 crimes were reported on the property.
