MARIETTA | Curtain falls on Theatre in the Square

MARIETTA, Ga. -- Theatre in the Square has abruptly closed its doors after three decades of performances.

The play Flyin' West was supposed to be performed this week at the theater in downtown Marietta, but the venue was dark early Monday evening, with the marquee bare and the poster windows empty.

"It's a real shame, 'cause they do wonderful productions here," season ticket holder Herb Wollner told 11Alive News.

The Marietta City Council had agreed to grant $30,000 to help the theater survive, but that wasn't enough to keep it open.

"We ran out of cash," said Mike Russell, who chairs the theater's board of directors. He said the board made the decision to close Monday afternoon after three days of deliberation.

Russell said the board has begun layoffs and paid its lease through Mar. 31.
