MARIETTA, Ga. -- The Marietta City Council has granted $30,000 to help the Theatre in the Square survive in its current location downtown.

The city council unanimously voted on Wednesday for the theatre, which had set a goal of raising $60,000 by the end of this week to continue operating.
Theatre founder and artistic director Palmer Wells says the grant will be combined with $32,000 in donations raised since February. Wells says the grant will go toward payroll, licensing plays, ticketing service fees and other critical bills.
The theatre has been a mainstay in the Marietta's downtown area as a regional attraction for metro Atlanta. But the theatre still hopes to raise another $400,000 by the end of June to retire all of its debt.
