Color your way to a college scholarship

ATLANTA -- Coloring is perhaps one of the first activities a child embarks upon in his or her educational journey. It creates a foundation for activity and a lifetime of learning.

This September, coloring can also help create a financial foundation.

One lucky Georgia child will join Kendall Lapinskas of Dunwoody and Taylor Boyd of Covington in winning a college scholarship from the Path2College 529 Plan. The winner of a coloring sweepstakes will be awarded $1,529 for his or her college savings plan.

"September is National College Savings Month and I am proud to once again join states across our country in an effort to raise awareness of the importance of saving for college by officially declaring September College Savings Month in Georgia," Governor Nathan Deal said.

"Education is the key to help our children succeed and achieve their dreams, and I hope families will begin planning for their children's future by saving today," he added.

Earlier this summer, Gov. Deal challenged Georgia families to invest at least $25 per month for each Georgia child's college education. He and Treasurer Tommy Hill also announced new lower fees, with reductions as much as 49 percent, for the state's Path2College 529 Plan.

"We hope that by raising awareness of the importance of saving for college through this sweepstakes and College Savings Month, we will encourage families to create a financial plan for their children's continued education," said Chuck Penuel, director of the Path2College 529 Plan.

To enter the coloring sweepstakes, children in pre-K through 5th grade should color Hootie the Wise Old Owl and fill in the blank: "When I graduate, I'm going to be a _____."

Coloring sheets and official rules can be found at www.path2college529.com.

Entries must be postmarked by Sept. 30 and received by Oct. 11. One winner will be randomly selected in October. The winner's school will also receive $1,000.
