Dad praises detective's handling of child molestation case

MARIETTA, Ga. -- A Marietta father is singing the praises of the detective who handled an investigation into child molestation at a Cobb County martial arts studio.

In January 2012, taekwondo instructor Young Jin Shim was charged with aggravated child molestation for having sex with one of his students at Shim's Martial Arts Academy of Taekwondo. He was ultimately convicted.

Michael Zimmerman's two daughters attended the martial arts school and were questioned by a detective with the Cobb County Police Department.

Zimmerman said he was impressed with the detective's handling of the case and wanted Cobb County residents to know the cailber of people employed by the police department.

School district announces graduation schedule

MARIETTA, Ga. -- Graduation is right around the corner for high school seniors in Cobb County.

The school system has announced the graduation dates, times and venues for its high schools. Family members and friends who can't attend the actual ceremonies can purchase DVDs and, in most cases, watch live Web broadcasts of the events.

Cobb event celebrates National Child Abuse Prevention Month

MARIETTA, Ga. -- SafePath Children's Advocacy Center, Cobb Safety Village and Radio Disney are hosting an event on Saturday for National Child Abuse Prevention month. 

According to a Cobb County official, "Safety Rules Rule" Family Fun Day will run from 10:00 a.m. - noon, and is set for the Safety Village on Al Bishop Drive. 

Free and open to the public, families can learn more about safety and enjoy music from Radio Disney's live DJ while playing interactive games.

Cobb County to hold largest egg hunt in Jim Miller Park

MARIETTA, Ga. -- Cobb County officials are helping to hold Cobb's largest egg hunt on Saturday, March 23 in Marietta.

The hunt will be held for various age groups of children from 10:00 - 2:00 Saturday afternoon. Held within Jim Miller Park, there will be children's art activities, live entertainment, inflatables and concessions. The Easter Bunny will visit and help out with the Mad Hatter Contest and Decorated Basket Contest.

The schedule for age groups to participate is as follows: 

 

  • 10 a.m.: Park opens
  • 10:30 a.m.: 3 years and under hunt
  • 11 a.m.: 4 and 5 years hunt
  • 11:30 a.m.: Special population hunt
  • Noon: 6 and 7 hunt
  • 12:30 p.m.: 8-10 years hunt
  • 1 p.m.: Mad Hatter Contest/East Basket Contest
  • 2 p.m.: Park closes

Run a dash for water efficiency awareness

COBB COUNTY, Ga. -- The Cobb Water System staff is helping to hold a family-friendly 5K race, which they say will increase awareness of water conservation throughout Cobb County. 

A spokesperson from Cobb County reported that all Cobb residents are invited to run the race, which has been named the Water Drop Dash 5K, which will also include a fun run for young kids. The dash is set for Saturday, March 16, at the Chattahoochee Nature Center in Roswell. 

Along with the race, children can take part in activities and win prizes, while hanging out with mascots that will be there to kick off WaterSense Fix-A-Leak Week. 

According to the Cobb spokesperson, water leaks count for more than one trillion gallons of water used in homes throughout the country each year. At the race, families wil be reminded to check plumbing fixtures and irrigation systems, which could increase water efficiency in homes and landscaping.

ATLANTA -- Eight year old Ava Bullard is playing with her sisters, riding their bikes on their long country driveway. It is a simple act that defies those who said she would never talk, those who said she wouldn't function in the real world.

Ava was not a typical baby, or toddler.

Her mother Anna says, "You couldn't interact with her."

Ava did not play with toys. Did not speak. Could not dress herself. Did not interact with her parents or sisters. Slept two hours a night. She was in her own world.

Anna says, "It's like she looked straight through me. She would just...it's like you weren't there, if you were in the room with her."

Anna Bullard took Ava from doctor to doctor for months. One doctor told the family Ava was 'just weird.'

ATLANTA -- Monday is the birthday of Monkey Joe, namesake of the popular indoor bounce house venues.

To celebrate, Monkey Joe's is offering plenty of family fun, including reduced admission prices, all day.

On Feb. 18, entry into every Monkey Joe's location is only $5. The first 100 children at each facility will be treated to a free pizza party, and the first 75 children will be given birthday party goodie bags.

"Monkey Joe's birthday party provides us an opportunity to thank our loyal customers for their continued support of Monkey Joe's locations across the country," Monkey Joe's brand manager Sonny Crumpton said in a statement.
