Georgia Author of the Year Awards | Essay nominees

KENNESAW, Ga. -- The nominees for the 2012 Georgia Author of the Year Awards have been announced.

More than 100 authors have been nominated in 12 categories, including Short Stories, which is a new addition in 2012.

Two local writers will face off to take home the top prize in the Essay category:

Sandy Weaver Carman
The Original MBA -- Succeed in Business Using Mom's Best Advice
An East Cobb-based speaker and writer, Carman has done theater and voice-over work throughout her career. She based her essay on the moments where some of life's most important lessons "sank in" for her.

Megan Volpert
Sonics in Warholia
Volpert channels her love of poetry, rhetoric and rock 'n' roll into everything she does. This Chicago native is also an English teacher at Roswell High School.

Robin L. Gordon
Lift: A Gosling's First Flight
A native of Michigan, Gordon has made it her mission to channel positive messages through her picture books. Her website says that she is certified to teach special education and enjoys watching geese in her spare time.

Three local writers will face off to take home the top prize in the Biography category:

Jonathan W. Jordan
Brothers Rivals Victors: Eisenhower, Patton, Bradley, and the Partnership that Drove the Allied Conquest in Europe
Jordan, an attorney who lives with his family in Marietta, is a World War II enthusiast. According to his website, he is currently working on a book about President Roosevelt's high command during the war.

The Atlanta Opera is Looking for Singers for the 24-Hour Opera Project!

 

What:             

Opera singers from all over may apply to compete in the second annual 24-Hour Opera Project on January 20 and 21, 2012. Apply online at atlantaopera.org.

Selected singers will join composers, lyricists, and stage directors, who will be randomly put into teams, and will have 24-hours to compose, stage and rehearse a 10-minute opera, to be performed as part of a showcase on Saturday, January 21, 2012 at 7pm. Compositions and performances will be judged by a panel of judges, and by the public, tuning in via live webcast. Prizes will be awarded to the judge’s choice and audience favorite. No travel, housing or per diem provided.
