COBB COUNTY, GA -- Several Cobb County high schools participated in shopping events for local children this holiday season.

Allatoona High School in Acworth held its annual "Shop with a Buccaneer" on Saturday, Dec. 11 at the Acworth Target. In their green shirts, the Allatoona Buccaneers turned the red-and-white Target store into a haven of Christmas spirit as they helped young Cobb students finish their holiday shopping.

The Allatoona High orchestra was on hand to provide festive music for the event, which raised over $8,000.

"Shop with a Hawk," sponsored by Powder Springs' Hillgrove High School, raised more than $5,000 for the families of 26 disadvantaged students in Hillgrove feeder schools.

More than 40 volunteers from the high school paired up with local kids to take them shopping at a Marietta Target store.

Kell High School held "Shop with a Longhorn," a shopping program with a twist, on Dec. 11. Each student raised $100 to spend on a "Little Longhorn" -- a student from a Kell feeder school.

Participants went shopping at a local Walmart, where the Kell band and chorus spread cheer with Christmas music. When the shopping was done, everyone returned to the high school for gift wrapping and lunch at the "Elf Workshop" in the cafeteria. The Little Longhorns each went home with a bag of food for the holidays.

Altogether, "Shop with a Longhorn" raised $13,000 to help local families. The Kell bus drivers also pitched in and collected $1,829.50 for the program.

Back in Powder Springs, McEachern High School created "Shop with an Indian" to support children in the area. Students from McEachern feeder schools received help with both shopping and gift wrapping at a Walmart store.

McEachern High principal Regina Montgomery pitched in, helping serve lunch to hungry shoppers. Even Santa Claus attended "Shop with an Indian" to hear last-minute gift requests.
