AUSTELL, GA -- Many seniors in assisted living homes depend on outside help to provide them with balanced meals.

Parkland Manor, an Austell apartment complex for independent seniors, does not have an on-site chef and therefore relies on the community to feed its residents. During this week's historic winter weather, it was virtually impossible to make these vital food deliveries to the home.

Mary Ward Cater, the courtesy officer at Parkland Manor, was worried the residents would not get enough to eat.

"The Bible said [God] called the old because they know the way, so we can't forget them and the roads they bridged for us," she said.

Cater reached out to the community and was overwhelmed by the response she received from local businesses.

Representatives from Atlanta Bread Company on South Cobb Drive in Smyrna, Food Depot in Mableton and Pasta Bella in Austell braved the icy roads and arrived at Parkland Manor with enough food to feed everyone in the complex's 150 units.

"Under the hill, where we are, no one could get out," said Cater. "But when I could [leave], they donated, and we thank them."
