Arrest Made in July Hit-and-Run
Crime

SMYRNA, GA -- Members of the Smryna Police Department's Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (S.T.E.P) have identified and charged the driver in the July 17 Cobb Parkway hit-and-run that put a Smyrna teenager in the hospital.

On Oct. 5, after a three month investigation, traffic homicide investigators took charges against Damon Dye, 44, of Marietta for hit and run, serious injury by a vehicle and duty to report an accident. Investigators used cell phone location data to triangulate Dye's movements prior to, at the time of and after the incident. This data placed Dye at the scene of the incident and also showed where Dye disposed of the vehicle in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Dye was previously arrested on July 23 for obstruction in connection to the case. He hindered the investigation by lying to investigators and providing multiple false accounts of where his vehicle was located.

The victim in this case sustained a severe head injury and fractured hip. She is still recuperating, but is expected to make a full recovery in time.

Dye is currently being held at the Cobb County Adult Detention Facility on $20,000 bond.
