Cobb Co. firefighter shows off cooking skills on 'Food Fighters'


 

MARIETTA, Ga. -- A Cobb County firefighter recently had the chance to show off his cooking skills on national TV.

Ryan McKay, a firefighter from Station 19 on Powers Ferry Road, competed on NBC's "Food Fighters." Professional chefs compete against amateur cooks for the chance of winning $100,000.

"It's more or less get in the kitchen and learn how to cook," said McKay, who has been a Cobb County fire fighter for nine years. "That's how we learn in the fire service, fast and furious. It carries over in the kitchen."

McKay made it all the way to the end on a show that featured numerous celebrity chefs. He won four out of the five rounds. McKay competed against Lorena Garcia in the final round on the show which aired July 30.

Bomb threat confirmed in Marietta


MARIETTA, Ga. -- Officials confirmed a bomb threat at Harry's Farmers Market in Marietta on Thursday but gave the all-clear when none was found not long after.

Management evacuated the building as officers arrived. After the building was searched, business owners were able to reopen. The investigation has been turned back over to Marietta police detectives.


DECAL: Registered sex offender stayed at Marietta home daycare


MARIETTA, Ga. -- A Marietta family home daycare remains open despite allegations that a registered sex offender lived at the house for an extended period.

According to a letter from the Georgia Department of Early Care and Learning, an investigation at the daycare located at 2104 Hascall Court found “serious rule violations occurred which seriously affected the health and safety of the children in care.”

Police: Man pointed fake gun at drivers


 

COBB COUNTY, Ga. – Police arrested a man he allegedly pointed a fake gun at motorists in Cobb COunty.

According to police, officers responded to several calls Monday morning of a man pointing a gun at drivers in the area of Powder Springs Road and Macland Road.

Police arrested the man, identified as Dashon Kelly, and determined that he had a fake replica of a rifle-type gun.

Kelly is charged with reckless conduct.

2 residents burned in Marietta apartment fire


MARIETTA, Ga. -- Fire officials are investigating the cause of a blaze at a Marietta apartment complex that injured two people on Monday.

The fire at the Crestmont Apartments in the 500 block of Williams Drive left 20 families displaced.

11Alive's Valerie Hoff learned two people suffered burns in the fire, and one of those victims also broke an arm while jumping to escape the flames. Both are being treated at an area hospital. No other injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Residents reported hearing an explosion shortly before the fire began. The two injured people were inside the apartment where the explosion occurred.

More than 40 Marietta firefighters spent much of the morning bringing the blaze under control. At least 16 of 20 unites were destroyed by the fire.

Police release sketch of would-be kidnapper


 

MARIETTA, Ga. -- Cobb County Police and the G.B.I. are releasing a sketch of the suspect wanted in the attempted abduction of a 10-year-old girl.

The man is described as a black male between 20 and 30 years old with a gold front tooth.  The attempted abduction happened at 2:45 p.m. August 25th near Powder Springs Road and Pair Road in Marietta.

Man stabbed to death in Cobb County, suspect arrested


COBB COUNTY, Ga. -- Cobb County Police have arrested the suspect accused of stabbing a man to death during an argument.

Investigators were dispatched to the 3100 block of Terrace Drive in Marietta shortly before 11:30 p.m. Monday.

When they arrived, they found 32-year-old Maurice Arnold lying on a front porch. Arnold had been stabbed several times. He was rushed to WellStar Kennestone Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Detectives arrested 67-year-old Aaron Strong without incident. Strong was charged with murder, aggravated assault, aggravated battery and possession of a knife during the commission of a crime. He is being held without bond in the Cobb County Adult Detention Center.
